Hello, everyone! And happy Camp NaNoWriMo to everyone who is participating this month!
I am fairly pleased with how this week went. Camp NaNoWriMo is upon us, and the writing is going fairly well. I’ve also gotten a lot of reading done this week. I even had a bit of time for some crocheting. I definitely can’t complain.
Writing (And Camp NaNoWriMo)
I have continued drafting Book 11 this week. I am making progress on the draft, and I reworked the outline a little bit. There were a few things I had planned for closer to the end of the book that I decided to move up a couple chapters to the current chapter. I think that will make the plot a bit more cohesive, and it should do a good bit with regard to increasing the tension of the current chapter. Since I usually don’t focus on tension in the first draft, I am always pleasantly surprised when it presents itself.
My plan for Camp NaNo this month is still to write 50,000 words for the month. Currently, I’m a about 800 words, so a little shy of where I should be. But the month is early, and there is plenty of time to catch up. I’m also thinking that with the deadline (and motivation) provided by Camp NaNo, I should be able to make a good bit of progress on both the current book and the next book. That will certainly be nice.
Reading
In last week’s update, I mentioned that I was reading Brandon Sanderson’s Shadows of Self. Well, I am happy to report that I have finished that book, and I have now read the sequel to that one, The Bands of Mourning. That puts me most of the way through the Mistborn series. I have a few things to read before I read the latest Mistborn book, The Lost Metal. Namely, there are a couple of short stories and a novella that are recommended to be read before that one.
I have also read two short stories/novellas that are in Sanderson’s Cosmere. Sixth of the Dusk and Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell take place on their own worlds within the Cosmere, though from what I gather, there are a few things in them that tie into the other books. I’m looking forward to seeing how that comes together.
Currently, I am reading the second of the four “secret novels” that are part of Sanderson’s “Year of Sanderson.” I’m not too far into it right now, though I am curious to know where it is going. It is definitely a different style from what he usually writes.
Art
I have not done much with art this week, though I have attempted to keep it in the forefront of my mind. A good bit of this week has gone toward writing and reading, but I do want to do more with art. I think I’m slowly coming up with a plan for how to start building that habit. It is definitely a wok in progress, though. The desire to draw and paint is present, I just need to get everything else to align properly.
Crafts
I planned to finish my current crochet project this past week, but my pace has slowed down. I am currently working on crocheting Doomslug, from Brandon Sanderson’s Skyward series. At the moment, it mostly needs a few final details, which I should be able to do relatively quickly.
For anyone who wishes to crochet your own Doomslug, there is a free Doomslug crochet pattern available as part of Brandon Sanderson’s “Year of Sanderson” goodies (you can find it the pattern here, just look under March and click the button that says “March Free Download”).
Next Week…
This upcoming week will be the first full week of Camp NaNo’s April session. As such, my primary goal is to draft as much as I can of Book 11. I would also like to outline a bit more of Book 11 and Book 12, in preparation for the rest of this month. As for everything else, I intend to read some of the remaining Mistborn related stuff, as well as the second secret project. I also want to finish crocheting Doomslug. I don’t really know what my plans are outside of that, but I think that should be a pretty good start.
Also, since Camp NaNoWriMo is happening now, feel free to add me as a writing buddy on the NaNoWriMo website. My name on the site is Theresa Seanchai, and you can find my profile here.
I think that’s everything for this update. Thanks for reading!
