Hello! I hope this finds you well! We are nearing the end of NaNoWriMo 2021, and I hope you have made some progress on whatever projects you might have been working on this month (writing-related or otherwise).
I have made more progress this month than I reasonably expected when the month started, especially when finishing Book 9 took almost 20,000 words than I anticipated. That said, in last week’s update, I mentioned that I completed the 50,000 words required for NaNoWriMo within the first 21 days of the month. Just today, I reached another goal which was to also get 50,000 words for the first draft of Book 10. Currently, I’m at a little over 69,000 words for the month, though I’m going to do as much as I can with this draft before the end of the 30th. I am also currently on track for the “write 1,667 words per day” badge to go on my profile for this project on the NaNo website. (It may not seem like much, but I’ve found that it has been a nice bit of extra motivation this month.)
So, last week, I mentioned that the question that remained as far as whether I could complete Book 10 this month was whether Book 10 could fit into 50,000 words. The answer to that is clearly no, especially when the draft is currently coming in at over 51,000 words, and I still have to get to the final portion of the book. That said, I am really close to starting that final portion, including a fun scene that popped into my head about a year ago. I’m thinking I should be able to get there in a few hours after completing this post. Then tomorrow will be a mad dash to the end (at least that’s how I am picturing it in my head). I do think I have the rest of the book mostly plotted… With as quickly as I’ve been drafting this month, I’ve kind of been going the route of “write a few chapters, plot a few more chapters” and then repeat as needed. However, since I’ve had a pretty good idea of the end of the book, the plotting was mostly in an effort to connect the beginning of the book to the end.
Given that I’ve written almost 20,000 words this week, and visited with family for part of the last week, I didn’t get much reading done. That said, I am almost done with the Star Trek book I was reading last week, Diane Duane’s My Enemy, My Ally. I’ve got about 40 pages left, so I get the feeling I will be finishing it in the next day or two (depending on how much time goes to finishing out NaNoWriMo.
For this upcoming week, I plan to finish the draft of Book 10. If I do manage to finish it within the deadline for NaNoWriMo, I will likely start working on Book 11, which will pick up shortly after the end of Book 10. In any case, I will likely be trying to plot a bit more of Book 11, even if I don’t actually get to start writitng it. Beyond that, I will be finishing the current Star Trek book I’m reading. Then I will likely move to Mercedes Lackey’s The Fire Rose. I also plan to write up a specific post about my NaNo experience this year after the month has ended.
If anyone would like to add me as a writing buddy for NaNoWriMo, my username is fantasy_writer42, and you can find my profile here.
I think that’s everything I’ve got for this update. Thanks for reading!
