Hello! NaNoWriMo 2021 starts a week from today!
This has been a fairly productive week for me, and I’m hoping this next week will be the same. I’m making some good progress on my draft of Book 9, and I got a good bit of Book 10 and Book 11 plotted. I still have some work to do on both fronts, but I am rather pleased with the progress I made.
The writing progress this week, included adding 6.5k words to the draft of Book 9. I’m definitely getting closer to the end. I’m not sure what total word count for the draft will be, though I’m thinking it will likely pass the 50k mark that was my original goal. I’m still aiming for 1,000 words per day since that seemed to work well for this past week. The story is definitely coming along nicely, and I get the feeling once I figure out certain pieces of the end of this draft, that will help me as I finish plotting the next arc. I’m hoping the timing works out well enough to figure out those elements and get them added into the outline fairly close to the start of NaNo, if not before.
As for reading, I finished reading Mercedes Lackey’s The Serpent’s Shadow. While I was reading it, I was definitely getting some Snow White vibes… When I was looking up the series after finishing the book, it seems that the connection to Snow White was intentional. Each book in the series is apparently loosely based on some fairy tale or other myth. It also seems that the series is not continually following a specific character, but rather a specific group, namely the titular Elemental Masters. I do have the second book, and I will likely pick that up soon. For now, I have started one of the Star Trek books that has been in my queue for a little while. This one is Double Helix: Double or Nothing by Peter David. If I am not mistaken, Captain Picard will feature in this book in addition to Captain Calhoun from The New Frontier series.
My plans for this week involve finishing assorted preparations for NaNo, not the least of which includes continuing (and hopefully finishing) my draft of Book 9. I also plan to outline as much of the final arc as I can. While my outlines are never 100% complete, I do find somewhere in the 50% to 75% range seems to work well for me. It gives enough structure to know where I’m going with enough flexibility to adjust for that the characters come up with. I will also continue reading the Star Trek book I started this past week. I’m not sure what else I might read this week.
If anyone would like to add me as a writing buddy for NaNoWriMo, my username is fantasy_writer42, and you can find my profile here.
I think that’s everything for this update. Thanks for reading!
