After two years of trying to catch an eclipse (lunar or solar, we weren’t picky), tonight my husband and I were finally able to see lunar eclipse.
It was amazing! (To be honest, I think it’s actually still going on as I type, but that doesn’t change the fact that it was amazing!)
We couldn’t see it from inside the house, so we would check every few minutes standing outside in the 14°F night looking at the sky. We bundled up in extra layers and we stared up at the moon as its red tinge increased. At midnight we went out and sat for the twelve minutes it took the eclipse to hit its peak and a few minutes after. It was frigid and blustery, and my fingers were very glad when we finally came in twenty minutes after venturing outside.
What a sight to behold. Yes, the science behind it is rather straightforward, and eclipses are fairly common (relatively speaking), but how often does that actually line up with something you can see in your backyard?
It brings back a memory from when I was younger, and my parents let my siblings and I stay up to watch the lunar eclipse. If I recall, we actually did watch most of it from the first hints of the moon disappearing, to the moon turning red, to the end of the eclipse. (Back home had the advantage of not being 14°F, and thus sitting outside for hours was quite pleasant).
I’m already looking forward to the next eclipse.
Did any of you get to see the latest lunar eclipse? Do you have any eclipse memories? I would love to hear from you!
