Embroidery: Mountains under a Painted Sky

So, I am a bit behind on posting this one, but here is my second embroidery project complete. The pattern was from an Instructable located here, and it has both a pattern and a tutorial.

I chose my own colors, based on the colors I happened to have on hand, and I liked the idea of the two-toned sky (I’d say I blame Van Gogh for that, but he’s to awesome to blame. ;)). It probably also doesn’t hurt that as I set out embroidering these mountains, I was also thinking of Tolkien and a certain dragon… I did actually debate trying to alter the pattern to make it more Smaug-friendly, but I figured it would be better to wait until I gain either more embroidery or drawing skills before I attempt that.

Stitches that appeared in my previous project were the chain stitch (border), the back stitch (mountains), and the running stitch (sky). The new stitches that I added to my personal book of stitches were the split stitch (dark grey lines on the mountains), and the satin stitch (moon), and the straight stitch (lighter and lightest grey lines on the mountains).

For the most part, this pattern seemed fairly straightforward, though I know a few things would certainly benefit from a bit more practice. I ended up using the full six strands of the floss for everything except the satin stitch where I used three strands. I think if I were making this for something more than learning, I would probably work with fewer strands to make the lines a little less bulky. I also would like to work on the straightness of my lines.

I am still working on tracking down new patterns, though I’ve currently got a few in my queue at the moment. Since I’m still learning, I am checking the Google for free patterns/tutorials in order to expand my skill set.

Have any of you done this pattern? Or do you have other sampler patterns you have enjoyed working? I would love to hear from you!
