Update: Week of 16 May 2022

Greetings! And welcome to the halfway point of May!

I am fairly pleased with how this week went. I made some good progress on book stuff, and I was able to read a good bit. All in all, that makes for a pretty good week in my book (pun not specifically intended, but take it if you like).

Book 11 is coming along nicely. I have maintained my current streak of writing at least a little every day, which is certainly nice. Most of the rest of my “writing time” this week went toward plotting Book 11 and conducting something of a deep dive on the way certain elements of the magic system work at this point in the series. I do think I am getting closer to getting all of that sorted out.

Reading for this week primarily consisted of Brandon Sanderson’s The Way of Kings, which I did finish. All in all, it was pretty good, though there were things I found more than a little ridiculous (namely the facts that most men didn’t learn to read or write because those were “feminine arts,” and that women were expected to use their left hands minimally, if at all, and keep them covered at all times because that was the proper thing in that society—that really doesn’t bode well for any left-handed women…). That said, since most of my reason for reading the book/series was wanting to learn more about the Cosmere and characters like Hoid, the pieces of the world/society that I wasn’t as fond of just became things I grumbled about as I kept reading. I definitely liked several of the characters, and I’m looking forward to seeing how things develop as the series continues. Other than that, I made a bit of progress with Maelstrom by Bethany Adams and Honor Blade by Diane Duane. The latter book I started a while back, and have circled back to it in light of finishing The Way of Kings.

This upcoming week, I plan to continue working on Book 11. That will probably be some combination of drafting, outlining/timelining, and worldbuilding specifically with regard to the magic system and how it affects different people. Other than that, I will probably be reading more of Honor Blade and Maelstrom. I will also probably be starting Sanderson’s Words of Radiance, the second book in The Stormlight Archive.

I think that’s about all for this update! Thanks for reading!
