Hello, everyone! I hope you’re doing well!
This past week has definitely been nice. I’ve been able to work on a few things, including continuing my first attempt at writing songs for February Album Writing Month (FAWM). I’ve even watched a bit of the Winter Olympics, so it’s been pretty fun all around.
I am definitely making progress with Book 10. I’ve got about four chapters remaining, at least as far as the outline currently says. That said, with the way the current chapter and the previous chapter went, they may get split into smaller chapters during or after drafting. I default to each of my chapters corresponding to a particular event, but I also default to shorter chapters in both writing and reading… having recently read a book with a 71-page chapter, I can confidently say that longer chapters make me hesitant. Other than my progress with Book 10, I’ve also been doing some general plotting on Book 11. And, as I mentioned in last week’s update, I’ve been able to do some fantastic worldbuilding with the help of FAWM (more on that in a bit).
This past week was a bit light with regard to reading, though I have made some progress on my three current books: Agatha Christie’s The ABC Murders, Jeff Wheeler’s The Queen’s Poisoner, and Diane Duane’s Honor Blade. So far, i am enjoying them all, and the mix of genres definitely keeps things interesting. At the very least, I currently have something that will fit just about any mood.
This month is my first attempt at FAWM. (I actually didn’t find out about it until about six months ago.) The goal is to write fourteen songs during the twenty-eight days of February. As of 13 Feb, I have eight songs written, and I have some general ideas for another half-dozen or so. So, for right now, I am slightly ahead of schedule, and that’s including taking a couple days to ponder things this past week. I am still finding FAWM–and songwriting–to be a fantastic source of worldbuilding. So far, I’ve gotten something of a jig, a lullaby, a couple war songs, a few gathering/party/celebration songs, and a couple others I don’t quite know how to classify. This process is really helping me breathe a bit more life and realism into the culture, which I am really enjoying. Even if these songs don’t actually make it into my books, they definitely help me have a better understanding of the culture.
For this upcoming week, I plan to make a bit more progress on my different projects. At the very least, that means continuing to draft Book 10 and plot Book 11. I’d like to make a bit more progress on reading The Queen’s Poisoner, in addition to the other books I’m currently reading. Other than that, I’m hoping to maintain my current lead with regard to FAWM.
For more information about FAWM, you can check FAWM.org. My username is fantasywriter42, and my profile can be found here. I don’t currently have my songs available to be read, but you can see what other people have managed to come up with during the month.
I think that’s everything I’ve got for now! As always, thanks for reading!
~ Theresa
