Update: Week of 7 Feb 2022

Greetings! I hope February is treating everyone well!

So far, my February is going really well! I’ve gotten some writing done. I’ve been able to read a little bit. Beyond those, I’ve been able to try my hand at writing songs for February Album Writing Month (FAWM).

With regard to writing, I’m definitely making progress with Book 10. I’ve still got a bit to go, but it’s coming along nicely. I’ve also been plotting Book 11, in addition to thinking about some other series I have in mind. So far, all of that is going pretty smoothly. My final writing note is that I’ve been doing some rather interesting worldbuilding (more on that in a bit…).

Reading for this week consisted of pieces of three different books, all of which have been at least mentioned in previous updates. These include Agatha Christie’s The ABC Murders, Jeff Wheeler’s The Queen’s Poisoner, and Diane Duane’s Honor Blade. Nothing like a little mystery/fantasy/sci-fi trifecta to keep things interesting.

I mentioned FAWM in last week’s update, and I said the goal is to write fourteen songs during the twenty-eight days of February. Now, I don’t exactly know much about writing music, but as the site mentions, the base goal is writing lyrics. As of 6 Feb, I currently have four songs written, putting me slightly ahead of schedule. Not to mention I’m actually expecting to have another couple drafted in the next day or so. Earlier in this post I mentioned that I had been doing some interesting worldbuilding… Well, I’ve been using this month to write some in-world songs for my series as a way to develop the culture a bit more. So far, I have had some really interesting results, and I’m actually surprised at how quickly things seem to flow once i get started with a particular song. At the moment, I have something of a jig, a lullaby, and a couple songs I don’t quite know how to classify. I suspect at some point (probably after February), I’ll see about sketching out the melody if nothing else… I do have at least enough skill reading music that I can probably manage that.

For this week, I intend to make more progress on my assorted projects. For writing, that means continuing to draft Book 10 and to plot Book 11. Other than that, I have quite a few books to keep me entertained on that front. My current focus will probably be The Queen’s Poisoner, but that might shift as the week progresses. Other than that, I’m looking forward to seeing what the second week of FAWM brings. I’m hoping to have another handful of songs by this time next week, and it’ll be interesting to watch the culture of my series and its people become just a little more tangible.

That’s all of this update. Thanks for reading!

~ Theresa
