Embroidery: Boquet in Blue

This was another pattern I found for free as an Instructable. It’s actually offered as part of a free class along with the pattern for my previous post: “Mountains under a Painted Sky.” The link for the class is here, and the class has a lot of useful information for starting out with embroidery.

I believe the only stitch in this pattern that I had done before was the chain stitch (border). The new stitches I learned were the fly stitch (leaves), the open fly stitch (light green vines), the stem stitch (the yellow/gold vines), the petal/lazy daisy stitch (the leaves on the yellow/gold vines), the woven spider wheel (blue flowers), and French knots (the tiny silver flowers).

This tutorial did say that some of these were advanced stitches, and after completing the pattern, I can understand why. While some of these stitches got easier as time went by, others grew more difficult (and I think out of all my attempts at French knots, only a few were successful… it probably doesn’t help that after a certain point i just kind of did my own thing.). The fly stitch took a little getting used to, but they it actually seemed to work rather well. I also like the stem stitch, though I can’t guarantee how good mine are.

The flowers were not overly fun, though they were certainly something new for me. I get the feeling I may have been pulling mine a little too tight, which not only makes the flower raised, but it also makes the flowers take quite a while to complete. That said I do like my blue flowers. I think they turned out well.

Overall, it was an interesting experience, and I am still on the hunt for more patterns/tutorials to be able to learn more stitches.

Do you have any tips that would make either French knots easier for a lefty? Do you have any stitches you prefer to work with? I’d love to hear from you!
