Greetings, everyone! Three weeks of NaNoWriMo down, about a week-and-a-half to go. I hope y’all are doing well.
I have actually been able to make some splendid progress this past week. I completed the 50,000 word challenge for NaNoWriMo just before the end of 21 Nov. For someone who normally doesn’t finish until the 29th or 30th, finishing on the 21st is definitely a new experience for me. I’m definitely trying to take advantage of the time I’ve got… And by finishing early, I’ve got about ten days to work on finishing the draft of Book 10.
The real question as far as whether I can finish Book 10 this month is whether or not the draft can fit into 50,000 words. Currently, the draft is at about 32,000, so it is certainly still possible, but with this book being the start of the final arc of the series, I get the feeling the draft will run a bit longer. As I mentioned in the updates for last week and the week before, Book 9 was planned as a 50,000 word draft, and it ended up at about 72,000. I suspect Book 10 might do something similar. That said, there are definitely some exciting things happening, and I am really looking forward to seeing how this book turns out. I know the final section is something I’ve been picturing for about a year now. so I’m glad to be getting closer to writing that part.
I finished reading The Gates of Sleep, the second book in The Elemental Masters series by Mercedes Lackey. I’ve got to say there are definitely assorted characters in that book that I really enjoyed. I’ve also picked up The Fire Rose, which is generally considered a ‘prequel’ to the series (it was published by Baen Books, and the branding as The Elemental Masters didn’t start until DAW picked up the series.). The Fire Rose is apparently loosely based on Beauty and the Beast, which has always been a personal favorite of mine. That said, since it took a little bit to track down a copy of that book, in the meantime, I also started reading a Star Trek novel by Diane Duane called My Enemy, My Ally. It’s set a little bit after Star Trek: The Original Series, and it involves Kirk, Spock, and McCoy finding themselves with an unexpected ally in the form of a Romulan Commander. So far, I am really enjoying the book.
The plan for this week involves a good bit more writing, in addition to visiting with people for the holiday. While I have managed to get the 50,000 words for NaNo, NaNo also offers a badge for your profile for updating your word count everyday (which I’ve gotten for a few years now), and a badge for writing at least 1667 words everyday of the month (which I am definitely still in the running for, for the first time ever). So, I’ve got plenty of motivation to get as much of this book drafted this week, not that there won’t still be a couple days left for next week.
If anyone would like to add me as a writing buddy for NaNoWriMo, my username is fantasy_writer42, and you can find my profile here.
That’s everything for this update. Thanks for reading!
