Update: Week of 15 Nov 2021

Hello! It’s hard to believe we are now at the halfway point for NaNoWriMo! I hope the month is treating y’all well so far!

The 15th of November marks the halfway point for NaNoWriMo. By this point (if maintaining an average of 1,667 words per day), the goal is to have 25,000 words. Currently, I am at 35,000, which is six days ahead of schedule for the month. That said, I am currently at about 17,000 words for Book 10, so I have a little bit of catching up to do if I also want to get 50,000 words for this specific draft. That said, it is currently more than doable.

This week, I have written about 15,000 words for Book 10. So far, some really interesting things are happening. I’m sure at least part of that is because I am currently working on setting up the final arc of the series, which is something I’ve been looking forward to for quite some time. So far, I’ve gotten to meet a couple new characters, and I get the feeling I’m about to meet a few more. I will have to see if this book will actually fit into 50,000 words. (As I mentioned in last week’s update, Book 9 was planned for a 50,000 word draft and ended up at about 72,000 words when all was said and done.) Still, the month is still early, and the writing is flowing sufficiently well. I’ve also been refining the plot a bit as I’ve been drafting, so I get the feeling as I get closer to the middle, I’ll have a better picture of how it is supposed to unfold.

I finished reading the Star Trek novel, Double Helix: Double or Nothing by Peter David. It was definitely interesting, and I’m curious to see how certain pieces influence the rest of The New Frontier series. I also picked up the second book of Mercedes Lackey’s The Elemental Masters series. This one is called The Gates of Sleep, and it is based on Sleeping Beauty. Each book in the series seems to be loosely connected to the others, mostly by the type of magic involved, though there have been some mentions of characters from the first book. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing if the series connects into some kind of larger story, but that might just be because I tend to default to reading more of the “hero’s journey” type series rather than the “further adventures of” type series.

This upcoming week, I intend to continue working on Book 10. If nothing else, I’ve known how this book would end for quite some time (despite not realizing that what I had in mind was actually the end of this book). As part of that, I will likely be refining the plot a bit more, particularly as I try to connect where I currently am to where I want to end up. Other than that, I will continue reading The Gates of Sleep.

If anyone would like to add me as a writing buddy for NaNoWriMo, my username is fantasy_writer42, and you can find my profile here.

That seems to be about it for this update. As always, thanks for reading!
